SGM and W-DMX Light Up Montreal’s Annual Sports Compact Performance Show
Kostar, a sound and lighting installation company from Montreal, used SGM lighting and W-DMX Wireless Solution products in its mandate to light various sites at the annual Montreal Sports Compact Performance show this past October. This modified auto show celebrated its 7 th anniversary this year and hosted some of North America’s top show vehicles, the hottest models, a Rocawear sponsored stage show, as well as the biggest corporate names in the automotive industry.
SGM is a renowned Italian brand of lighting consoles, dimmers, moving head fixtures, and light effects, while W-DMX is the product of Wireless Solutions AB, a Swedish company whose goal is to produce reliable, compact, and easy-to-use wireless DMX512 solutions for architectural, theatrical and corporate events.
Kostar designed and installed the lighting for the GM, Pioneer and Continental Tires booths as well for the main stage where the awards and fashion show were presented. The lighting across the three booths was linked by W-DMX, which was running the moving lights and the dimmers. “The W-DMX worked flawlessly and spanned the entire floor of the Montreal Olympic stadium- an incredibly long space!” commented Adam Feldstain, lighting designer with Kostar. As for using SGM Giotto’s in the 3 booths and Palco’s on the stage, Adam notes that, “in a very demanding industry with a lot of uncertainty, I can always rely on SGM to come in on cue.”
At the end of the day, whether used together or independently, SGM and W-DMX products always provide quality, reliable solutions to discriminating installers and lighting designers.
Equipment used:
- 12 SGM Giotto Spot 400’s for the three booths
- 8 SGM Palco’s on the main stage
- W-DMX to link and control all the lights

Delirium Perfects Fantasy with Wireless DMX
Uddevalla , Sweden – Wireless Solution Sweden AB plays a key role in Cirque Du Soleil´s extraordinary new touring production, Delirium. W-DMX distributor SAND Network Systems supplied Cirque Du Soleil’s equipment provider Solotech Location Inc. of Montreal with an extensive W-DMX system including 34 BlackBox R-512 Receivers, 11 BlackBox S-1 Transmitters, and 11 BlackBox B-1000 Boosters.
The show is a musical and acrobatic presentation of select Cirque Du Soleil songs in an arena format that is quite different from anything seen before. The show is performed with one massive rig, rather than a traditional circus tent. The stage, 130’x20’x50’, intersects the arena and effectively creates an intimate two-sided space that features an impressive line-up of lighting, projection, and motion technology. Like an enormous game of Tetris, each piece of the design requires specific coordination and timing.
The show presents huge technical and logistic challenges. It takes twenty-four 18-wheelers just to haul the equipment from arena to arena. There are 145 people on tour, including 45 performers, 75 technicians and 25 management and support personnel, requiring 14 tour buses to transport them all. It takes custom-designed rigging (specifically two special rail bridges) to support 130,000 pounds of equipment above the stage.
But the actual performance is what really requires magic. Twenty-seven variable speed motors, provided by Microtrol, are needed to help characters “fly”, including four for the main character, who circles around in a giant balloon during the show. The show features singers floating across the stage, musicians roaming the floor and various performers that walk, sprint, jump, or even fly through each of the scenes. The only way to successfully create these illusions was with wireless technology.
Assistant LD Valy Tremblay was responsible for the wireless system and specified a system that includes a large number of custom made RF cables, antenna arrangements, and power options to accommodate this unique project. “W-DMX is my big discovery of the year! I just don't want to use cable anymore! It was so easy to set up and we never had any trouble with them!” he raves. “At first, we used them as a solution for 1000w 12v artistic lights. Those lights are called in the show the ‘luminous swings’. Performers use them as luminous acrobatic rigging equipment. It looks like they are swinging on moving stars!”
W-DMX is especially effective for the balloon. Tremblay explains, “We had Bill, a key character that keeps the whole show traveling under his 15-foot balloon. We needed to light up the balloon, and used sixteen Color Kinetics iColor Cove MX Powercores inside with W-DMX units to control them. This was again only possible with W-DMX, since we had power but no data possible traveling with that moving rigged element. Then, we had to add some fixtures in trusses with the bundles already made. What an easy solution to use a W-DMX receiver to control those fixtures!”
W-DMX by Wireless Solution Sweden AB is the only system on the market for Wireless DMX that is dual award winning. A complete range of Transmitters, Receivers, Repeaters and Boosters for transmitting wireless DMX data are available for both indoor and outdoor application. The product is suitable for both entertainment as well as architectural lighting application but also for OEM purposes, built inside fixtures and consoles. The word is spreading fast and shows like Delirium are turning to W-DMX again and again to achieve the impossible.

SF Marketing Inc. Embraces New Wireless Technology with W-DMX
SF Marketing Inc. is pleased to announce it has been appointed as the exclusive distributor of Wireless Solutions AB wireless transmission products for Canada.
Wireless Solutions AB provides innovative wireless solutions for the lighting, sound and AV industries. Founded in 2003 by professionals from GSM Digital Mobile and professionals from the lighting industry, the company offers an easy to use, affordable, and professional range of products including their W-DMX range. Designed and produced in Sweden, the award-winning (Plasa 2005 and LDI 2005) W-DMX is becoming an industry standard for reliable solutions in transmitting DMX 512 wireless data.
W-DMX is the first range that offers support for wireless transmission of protocols such as: DMX 512, DMX 512A, RDM and ACN. The W-DMX product range is by far the most advanced and easy to use for transmitting and receiving DMX 512 wireless data in safe and encrypted mode. Any fixtures or products that accept and follow the DMX protocol, such as moving lights, dimmers, media servers and special effects can be operated with W-DMX. There are no required settings needed to make the system work; it is a compact, 100% plug-and-play unit that sets up in less than 60 seconds. Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, W-DMX includes products for any professional installation or one-off gig at an arena or theatre. It is also ideal for point-to-point and point-to-multipoint installations.
Unlike the W-LAN standard the W-DMX uses Adaptive Frequency Hopping Technology (FHSS), which changes frequency 1000 times per second and jumps only to channels that are not used by other W-LAN and/or any other products on the 2,45 GHz band. This together with TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) gives users the guarantee of a much safer technology without interference.
SF Marketing looks forward to a bright future with Wireless Solutions AB as their W-DMX will also support other manufacturer’s protocols such as: ETC, Dali, ACN-Lite, Art-Net, ETCNET2, StraNd ShowNet, AVAB IPX and Compulite Net. The product will also be available for controlling and sending/receiving professional quality data for Audio as well as Video.
Stay tuned for news on upcoming W-DMX seminars given this Fall by SF Marketing!
W-DMX will be available Fall 2006 through SF Marketing Inc.

SGM LIGHTS UP QUEBEC CITY’S ST-JEAN CELEBRATION
Every year, the concert that culminates Quebec City’s national holiday festivities is the most anticipated show of the season. It always features renowned artists, over 250,000 spectators, and is broadcast live on the TQS network. With a show of this magnitude, it is not surprising to learn that the event’s producers, La Société des Fêtes de la St-Jean and TÉLÉ-VISION, call upon AXION SÉA time after time to design and supply sound, lighting and projection equipment for the event which took place this past June 23 rd at Quebec City’s Plaines d’Abraham. Martin Chouinard, AXION’s rental manager, does not hesitate to say, “This is probably our greatest challenge of the year. This project represents more than four months of preparation. The fact that this is such an important show and that it is broadcast live on television leaves little margin for error.” Chouinard adds, “And, to be successful, we need the best tools.”
Italian brand SGM’s lighting products comprised some of the most important tools that AXION SÉA uses to make it all work.
“When talking about shows that are broadcast on TV, lighting is key,” comments Chouinard. “Our basic setup consists of more than 240 conventional projectors, but the real difference is made with the addition of 12 SGM Giotto Spot 400’ CMY’s and 4 SGM Synthesis Spot 700’s. The Giottos are amongst the most reliable products in our rental inventory, and bringing in the Synthesis projectors this year made a huge difference when it came to the quality of the textures. We are extremely happy with the results that these projectors have given us in terms of the level of various animation possibilities they offer.” Hubert Gagnon, programmer in charge of the event’s projectors, explains, “The Synthesis projectors were used to create lighting effects in order to add another dimension in the visual space above the artists. The sheer power and animation effects of SGM’s Synthesis allowed us to obtain incredible results when it came to the TV image.”
At the end of the day, Martin Chouinard adds, “Once again AXION SÉA, with the help of SGM fixtures, delivered a quality show that was over and above the standards that our clients were looking for. See you next year!”

SGM IN QUEBEC CITY: Carnaval De Quebec
The Carnaval de Québec has the reputation of being one of the largest winter attractions in the world. For it’s 52 nd celebration, the carnival’s mascot, Bonhomme Carnaval, could be seen smiling and partying in Quebec City from January 27 to February 12 of this year.
To lodge distinguished guest Bonhomme, his first palace was built in Jacques-Cartier Square in 1955. This stately ice construction included a dungeon used to lock up participants (for fun!) who did not pay tribute to Bonhomme. From 1956 to 1972, Bonhomme stayed at Carré d’Youville. At this lively and illuminated location, people would get together to sing, dance and celebrate. In 1973, Bonhomme moved his ice palace in front of the province’s Parliament.
From 1979 to 1992, icy snow was used to build the palace. Nine thousand tons of snow was compacted to create gigantic building blocks. The resulting castle was most impressive; it took fifteen men more than two months to put it all together. It was all worth it as Place du Palais has become the rallying point where most activities take place during the Carnaval. In 1993, attendants celebrated the Palais’ official return and saw the event as a return to the festival’s roots.
Since 1994, Quebec based Axion, has designed the lighting and installed the equipment at the Palais de Glace contributing to elevating the event to high professional standards. Pierre Plante is responsible for production while Executive Assistant Steve Ross manages the daily activities. “This is a very peculiar event,” says Pierre Plante. “To start with, the area we have to cover is quite large and then, we’ve got to cover it all. Also, we need to take into account all the activities taking place within that area with the thousands of people visiting the Palais each day. So, our installation has to be efficient and quite transparent.”
Axion’s work starts as soon as the architects come up with their plans, which happens roughly one month before the January event. Another reality to consider, lighting equipment will be on the premises for at least 18 days. To this end, Axion’s team designed special Plexiglas cabinets to help the equipment withstand the extreme colds associated with Quebec winters.
Mr. Plante adds, “For the 2006 Carnaval, we decided to do like last year and use SGM lighting gear, Giotto 400’s and Palco’s. Ten Giotto Spot 400CMY’s and 7 Palco3-40’s were installed at the Palais. It was the first time that Axion installed the 400’s and Palco’s outside. We were most impressed by the optical quality of the projectors; outstanding purity and brightness are features that come instantly to mind. Also, the Palco’s remained unprotected from weather conditions for the entire show and performed better then we expected. All these details are important to us. It is obvious that the Giotto 400’s and Palco’s have been designed with professional applications in mind.”
A few weeks before the actual event, lighting equipment go through in-house tests at Axion. Effects are reviewed and fine-tuned as the organization’s team regularly check in to see how the Palais site is taking shape and to offer suggestions that will simplify installation which takes about two days for an eight-man team to put together. A third day is needed to focus the lighting equipment. From there, a 15-minute computer-looped program is introduced to take over the presentation. Later, maintenance becomes the main consideration for the Carnaval’s duration.
Pierre Plante says, “SGM devices really delivered for us. They’re tough and reliable in every way. I’d like to add that we’ve been quite surprised with the actual power found in the small Giotto 400’s and the brightness projected from the Palco’s makes it hard to believe it’s an LED fixture. These projectors will surely be part of our future designs. Also, Canadian distributor S.F. Marketing’s support is outstanding and we really appreciated the time and effort of their representative Claude Rivard in putting all of this together for us these last few months. SF is a solid organization and surely a great example to follow.”

Rolling Stones - "A Bigger Bang"!
SGM Palco 3 chosen for the legendary band’s light show
Performing on stage with a historical rock band is a goal only a few achieve. For Palco 3, it also validates increased on-going success. In fact, it was SGM’s LED Colour Changer that was chosen by the great lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe to reproduce the incredible colour architecture used on the Rolling Stones’ new tour, "A Bigger Bang"!
No less than 40 units will be used on the set to create an astonishing show. All are designed by one of the industry’s best-known geniuses, a designer of artistic lighting for concerts by top artists on the world’s music scene (from the Stones to Tina Turner and Bob Dylan to Depeche Mode, to mention just a few).
A LED Colour changer with a whole new concept
Palco 3 is a colour changer able to give uniform high-powered light beams, endless colour combinations and perfect control of all shades. A series of indispensable features now also make it a product that is a reference point for one of the world’s most important live productions.
In particular:
- Its very high luminosity set records even in the LED lighting sector (2,200 Lumens for Palco 3 with 3W LEDs);
- Total silence , achieved thanks to the lack of any type of forced ventilation (cooling is carried out via convection, by means of the unit’s rear finning);
- Power consumption is a lot lower than conventional light sources, due to the use of LED technology. This enables considerable energy saving and also means lower environmental impact.
Award-winning design
A product intended for more demanding performers, Palco 3 also has decidedly attractive lines, thanks to its unusual, exclusive and stylish design. A year ago, this feature enabled it to win the prestigious ETS-LDI 2004 Award in the Lighting/Architecture category.
Further gratification recently came with its qualification for the finals of the prestigious "iF Design Award" Hannover Germany 2006, an award that all those professionally involved in the industrial design field acknowledge as one of the most authoritative in the world.
iF Design Award
Since the LDI Award 2004 Lighting Architecture Product of The Year, Palco 3 Led Colour Changer received widespread success in a wide range of applications: architectural andurban sites, monuments, museums, shopping centers, concerts, television studios, theatres, and in the show business industry.
Palco 3 units have become a standard in the most important live, theatre and television applications:
- Rolling Stones, Bigger Bang Tour – Giorgia, Tour - Rock Politik, TV Show - Torino 2006, Olympic Games – Coldplay, World Tour - Joss Stone, UK and Euro Tour - MTV Oxegen Festival, TV Show - Shakira, Tour…. confirm the Palco 3 trends of success.
Palco 3 Led Colour Changer got to the finals of “iF Design Award” Hannover Germany 2006. The “ iF Design Award”, which has been staged since 1954, is a prestigious trademark for outstanding design.
Palco 3 is a visible symbol of product and service quality: luminous intensity, bright colours, exclusive design and protection to IP65.
For buyers of design-oriented products, Palco 3 shows SGM's commitment to innovation.

HALIFAX DRINKS TO SGM’S RIBALTA!
By Gilles Valiquette
Nova Scotia’s Tour Tech East is an organization based in Dartmouth specializing in tour support and equipment sales. Its professional activities have been covering North America for more than twenty years now and cater to a vast array of performances ranging from bands like 50 Cent and Simple Plan to events exhibited by Skate Canada. Locally, Tour Tech has been instrumental in setting up theatres like the Neptune, the Savoy and the Imperial. Also noteworthy is their participation in Le pays de la Sagouine, a cultural site.
This time around, the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission needed to revamp one of their main stores in Halifax. They called upon designer Glen McMinn of Breakhouse Design, renowned for his warm and human approach, to put together an in-store concept that would change with each season. In turn, Mr. McMinn called upon Dave Rutterham, installation manager at Tour Tech, to create the ambiance needed using top-of-the-line lighting tools.
Dave says, “We mainly needed an artistic tool here, something quite flexible that could move around depending on the season”. So, Dave set his sights on SGM’s colour-changing Ribalta projector to add “a bit of emotion” and completed the setup with 4 Martin Mania DC1s. “We actually demo’d the setup on site with the Ribalta at the back of a 12’ by 12’ plexi display and the glow of the whole thing was just astounding. Everybody was impressed with the light beam created by those Luxeon LEDs as the light source.”

Dave adds, “In terms of installation, we went in there on a Monday to install the fixtures. The next day, the electricians did their job and when we came back on Wednesday, the thing was already turned on and the timer programmed. There’s an internal microcomputer in there with a software menu that’s really easy to use. It was that simple; 2 guys, 4 hours.”
The good news is that the Liquor Commission liked the presentation to the point of gearing up to install 5 or 6 similar showcases in the province early next year.
In Dave’s opinion, “Programming the Ribalta is very simple and the timer is just flawless. No maintenance is needed and there’s no heat. By the way, there’s an optional remote controller that enables a series of functions to be controlled, including switching the fixture on and off, adjustment of RGB colour mixing, macro, programs and colour combinations with 20 presets. This thing is a dream; it really delivers.”
Mr. Rutterham added “Of course, the equipment is just part of the equation. We really appreciate SF Marketing’s fantastic service. Our rep Jodi Rhuland in particular is so much more than just supportive. We are looking forward to bigger and better things together in the future.”
