QSC audio INTRODUCEs Four New CINEMA Surround Loudspeakers

New additions to the DCS Series deliver the ultimate in surround sound

QSC Audio Products, the acknowledged leader in cinema sound, continues to expand its commitment to providing the ultimate sonic experience with the introduction of four new two-way digital cinema surround loudspeakers that are designed to optimize audience coverage and deliver superior sound in any size venue.

Today’s cinema seating is located closer to the surround loudspeakers. Therefore, audiences hear localized sources rather than the proper diffuse sound field. Dolby Digital Surround EX ® and DTS-ES ® formats also place unprecedented output level demands on these surrounds, which can only be compensated for by grouping them closer together at greater cost. QSC designed the SR-26 and SR-46 to combat these sound challenges and to better provide the ultimate movie-going experience. The SR-26 features two high-power, long-throw 6.5” low-frequency transducers, and the SR-46 is designed with four high-power, long-throw 6.5” woofers. Both models feature a 1” titanium diaphragm high-frequency compression driver, and a 90º horizontal by 50º vertical dispersion pattern for greater reach and a more consistent SPL.

The SR-18 is a compact, cost-effective system featuring a high-power, long-throw 8” low-frequency transducer, while the SR-110B boasts a high-power, long-throw 10” low-frequency transducer. QSC introduces new members of QSControl.net family of products

QSControl.net, QSC's next-generation networked audio system platform, achieves the seamless integration of the company's signal transport, processing, and monitoring technologies. System design and real-time control and monitoring are implemented via a fully integrated graphical user interface.

As part of the company's QSControl.net platform, we find three types of machines; BASIS units integrate signal transport, signal processing and amplifier monitoring technologies, RAVE boxes do transport and processing, and finally DSP boxes do only local processing. Recognizing that there were varied needs in the marketplace, QSC introduces four new BASIS devices, two RAVE boxes, and a DSP unit. These are the BASIS 722az, BASIS 914lz, BASIS 922dz, BASIS 922uz, RAVE 520uz and the RAVE 522ua, and DSP 322ua models.

The signal transport component of QSC’s technologies is called RAVE (Routing Audio Via Ethernet), an integration of Peak Audio’s industry-standard CobraNet™, a technique to carry up to 32 channels to and from system nodes over regular CAT5 Ethernet cables and standard network devices.

The DSP (Digital Signal Processing) section implemented in QSControl.net boxes is unique in that it features a short and fixed processing latency through the DSP subsystem. Users of most other configurable DSP systems are familiar with a variable latency inherent in the processing configuration. Add more processing blocks and you also add delay, whether you want it or not. When the A/D and D/A converters are included, the total analog-to-analog latency of a single unit is a negligible 2.354 milliseconds. QSC's fixed latency DSP is configurable DSP that stays fast and predictable from one configuration to the next.

The last component to be integrated in the new boxes is QSControl itself, the technology QSC developed to control and monitor signals going through its amplifiers. QSControl.net can determine signal presence, clipping, open or shorted speaker lines (it monitors both voltage and current to calculate if the system is operating under user-defined limits). QSControl.net can also monitor amplifier temperature and can put the amplifier in sleep mode. QSControl.net designers can easily build custom user interfaces and implement automated event-based system response.

We invite you to visit QSC’s website at http://www.qscaudio.com/products/network/basis/qscontrolnet_basis.htm to review the different models’ specific feature sets and to determine which model(s) would best fit your next installations.

EAW's NT Series – Premier Self-Powered Loudspeakers

NT SERIES -- The First Loudspeakers with Gunness Focusing™ Technology

The NT Series of loudspeakers with Gunness Focusing represent a true breakthrough in powered loudspeaker design. NT loudspeakers are compact, self-powered, and extremely lightweight while providing the exceptionally high output required for professional use. More importantly, they are the first high-output loudspeakers to deliver studio monitor quality sound, in portable as well as permanent installations.

The NT Series are not conventional PA loudspeakers. They incorporate a revolutionary active DSP (digital signal processing) technology we call Gunness Focusing - after its inventor, David Gunness - EAW's Director of R&D. In basic terms, Gunness Focusing corrects the sonic problems inherent in conventional compression driver phase plugs, horns, and LF driver technology. This, along with the highest quality internal amplification, affords sonic performance comparable to premium direct radiating studio monitors, but at much higher output levels.

All digital processing hardware and software necessary to implement Gunness Focusing was custom designed by Acuma Labs, Ltd, and the internal DSP is factory preset to provide correct and consistent performance. The NT’s integral electronics are based on proven, high efficiency amplifier technology, and feature field-replaceable amplifier modules for added convenience and minimal down time should an extremely rare amplifier failure occur.

NT Models
The 2-way NT loudspeakers are available in both 12-inch and 15-inch LF driver formats. Different coverage patterns are offered to meet typical coverage requirements depending on intended applications. The trapezoidal design of the enclosures makes them easy to use as a main PA loudspeaker, or as a floor wedge for stage monitor applications.

The companion NT Subwoofer complements the NT full-range loudspeakers by extending low frequency response as well as increasing low frequency output capabilities. The drivers are installed in a “push-pull” configuration where one faces into the enclosure while the other faces outward. The drivers are connected with opposite polarity, so both cones move in the same direction. At high output levels, each cone "loads" the other in the opposite direction smoothing out any mechanical asymmetries. The result is significantly reduced distortion, even at ultra-high output levels.

NT Amplification
To maximize performance, the full-range loudspeakers are bi-amplified, meaning the LF and HF drivers each have their own Gunness Focusing DSP and built-in, high-efficiency amplifier (1000 W LF and 500 W HF). The subwoofer is dual-amplified, meaning each driver has its own built-in, high efficiency amplifier (1000 W each).

Application Usage:
The NT Series can be used for wide variety of portable and permanent installation applications:

  • Theatres
  • Corporate AV
  • Clubs
  • Houses of Worship
  • Schools
  • Gymnasiums
  • Band PA
  • and many others

NTI introduces the TalkBox, an acoustical STI-PA Reference Loudspeaker/Generator

NTI introduces the TalkBox, the missing link for the complete evaluation of speech intelligibility in emergency life & safety announcement systems, from the talker’s microphone to the listener’s ear.

Using the TalkBox greatly simplifies the feed of the STI-PA intelligibility test source signal in closed sound reinforcement systems, as it presents the standardized voice-like acoustical signal emission simulating a human talker according to IEC 60268-16, combined with a TNO certified speech intelligibility signal at standardized levels.

The TalkBox features human head-like dimensions and is based on a Solid-State-Generator. It perfectly equalizes the STI-PA test signal and replays it at the precisely correct playback sampling rate, also minimizing systematic errors through the internal amplifier and internal precision loudspeaker.

Due to the required overall accuracy of ±1 dB over the relevant frequency range, each TalkBox is individually equalized and calibrated for precision output. The radiation characteristic complies with the ITU-T P.51 in wide ranges.

The speaker may additionally be muted via an external remote control interface. Other test signals such as Delay Chirp, Polarity Signal, and White and Pink Noise are also available and are fed to the XLR output with flat equalization. A microphone stand thread and a carrying case complete the functionality of the TalkBox.

“The TalkBox is extremely simple to operate and finally completes the entire chain of speech intelligibility measurements. The portable STIPA implementation is gaining more and more popularity and the launch of the TalkBox is the logical step to complete the measurement chain from the talker to the listener.” says Philipp Schwizer, CEO of NTI AG.

EAW Introduces 12 New Models into their Popular MK Series of Compact Installation Loudspeakers

New MK 2300 and MK 5300 Speakers Feature New Drivers, Selectable Single-amp/Bi-amp Operation, and Even More Output than Ever Before

EAW introduces 12 new models in their popular MK Series of compact, two-way, fixed-nstallation speakers. The new MK2300 and MK5300 benefit from new components and circuitry that not only increase their trademark “workhorse” versatility, but also allows them to deliver even more high-quality sound than any other speaker near their price and size.

The new MK2300 and MK5300 speakers begin with an all-new 3-inch-voice coil compression driver that is mated to one of six different HF horns with patterns ranging from 60° x 45°, to 120° x 60°. The horns are as large as the enclosure size allows in order to maintain consistent directivity throughout the HF passband. In addition, the HF horns are user-rotatable, allowing installers to mount the loudspeakers in both vertical and horizontal applications. Even the LF driver is purposely designed to complement the sonic character and output of the HF driver.

All MK Series models are carefully designed to sound similar, permitting diverse horn patterns to be mixed throughout an installation while maintaining the same sonic quality. The result is a cleaner, high-fidelity output at significantly higher levels than is normally expected from a speaker in the new MK’s size and price category.

In addition, all MK Series models can be switched from single-amp to bi-amp operating mode. In single-amp mode, the beamwidth matching passive crossover is designed for even power response through the crossover, low power losses, and high power handling. In bi-amp mode, the loudspeakers are designed to work with an outboard digital signal processor (DSP). This improves power transfer and provides more sophisticated processing to maximize performance.

“The new EAW MK Series incorporates the famous EAW technology in such a smart package that makes them the perfect solution for the main PA in an endless list of small applications,” commented Rich Frembes, Product Director for EAW. “We are pleased to introduce the latest additions to our popular MK Series and to continue to grow this popular EAW line.” (07/2005)

AX Series Loudspeakers

The first Loudspeakers with Concentric Summation Array™ (CSA™) Technology

With dual-trapezoidal enclosures and rotatable horns, EAW AX Series loudspeakers give you unlimited degrees of freedom to configure arrays- horizontal, vertical, even spherical sections. But it’s the patent-pending CSA technology inside that gives you near-perfect coverage in any configuration. This technology brings the AX Series several steps closer to the mathematical ideal of a point source.

3 reasons why AX Series is the Best-Sounding Installed Speaker ever:

  • A new sealed co-axial mid/high driver;
  • A radically new waveguide/phase plug that couples EAW mid/high co-ax to a single horn;
  • The Fibonacci Spiral.

Ultimate array flexibility

To give array designers the most flexible, predictable and powerful modules ever, EAW engineers coupled their patent-pending CSA device to high-Q and medium-Q horns. With a single driver and horn flare, AX horns can occupy the maximum amount of front baffle area and exercise broadband pattern control. Dual 12-inch woofers on either edge of the flare extend the Acoustical Singularity into the low frequencies. Finally, EAW made the horns rotatable and packaged the entire system in dual-trapezoidal enclosures. With all these options, you can use the symmetrical beamwidth of AX Series modules to build arrays that cover almost any audience perfectly.

Building our their innovation

The sound of the AX Series’ Concentric Summation Array is unmistakable. And only EAW could have created it, because they own the patents on the ideas that make it possible. We urge to experience the AX Series for yourself before you design your next array.
