AcousticTools is a powerful suite of software tools for detailed analysis of audio data stored in standard Windows wave files. The AcousticTools package consists of an Analysis module and an Intelligibility module, both purpose-built for the measurement and analysis of impulse response data in both the time and frequency domains.

With Smaart AcousticTools you can:

  • Capture the impulse response of a system for analysis using your choice of a stimulus-independent Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) measurement technique
    or Maximum Length Sequence (MLS)
  • Determine Reverberation and early Decay times (T and EDT) using ISO accepted methods and/or "eyeball integration"
  • Calculate objective Speech Intelligibility metrics including STI, ALCons, and Clarity factor (e.g., C50)
  • Analyze the frequency characteristics of reflections and other trouble spots in octave, 1/3-octave or narrowband resolution
  • Display Time Domain plot, Energy Time Curve and Schroeder integration for broadband data and octave or 1/3-octave bands
  • Study Decay characteristics for specific frequencies based on time- or frequency-domain data
  • Display wave file data as a spectrograph combining time, and magnitude characteristics for all frequencies on a single plot
  • Compare time- and frequency-domain representations of two wave files
  • Calibrate magnitude values for frequency-based displays to SPL or other external reference
  • Record random-length mono or stereo wave files at sampling rates up to 48000/sec with 8 to 24 bits/sample resolution
  • Print out plots and data tables in report style format
  • Export data in ASCII format for use in other applications

Please note that AcousticTools does not include Smaart or any real-time measurement capability of its own. For real-time sound system measurement and analysis applications, see Smaart v.6.

The primary Intelligibility module data display combines either the Impulse Response or Energy Time Curve of the impulse response with a reverse time integration plot for broadband (unfiltered) data or individual octave or 1/3-octave bands. Early decay and reverberation times can be calculated manually or automatically (based on ISO standard methods).

The Spectrograph display in the Acoustic Tools Analysis module provides a "3-D" view of the wave file data by combining time, frequency and magnitude on a single plot.

    Intelligibility Module:
  • Data displays: Time Domain (amplitude vs. time with linear or logarithmic amplitude scaling), ETC, Schroeder integration, plus Intelligibility comparison graph and All Bands Table
  • Impulse Response recorder sampling rates: 4000 to 48000 samples/sec
  • Impulse Response recorder FFT/MLS sizes: 4k to 256k
  • Time domain filters (44100 and 48k, FIR): 63 Hz to 8 kHz octave bands, 63 to 12.5 kHz 1/3-octave bands plus support for user-defined FIR/IIR filters in ASCII format
  • Standard T20 and T30 Reverberation time and EDT calculated automatically for broadband data and octave bands between 100 and 5000 Hz or 1/3 octave bands from 125 and 4000 Hz (based on ISO 3382:1997)
  • Speech Iintelligibility metrics: STI, RSTI, ALCons (long and short forms), user-selectable Clarity factor (Cn, where n = 1-200 ms, e.g., C7, C35, C50) plus automatic calculation of C10, C20, C50 and C80 in All Bands Table
    Analysis Module:
  • Data displays: Time Display (time vs. amplitude linear, logarithmic or absolute value), Time Slice (magnitude over time for specific frequency ranges), Frequency Slice (spectrum/power spectrum), Spectrograph (time vs. magnitude vs. magnitude)
  • Time Domain and Time Slice include delta cursor tool to calculate decay rate and T (T60/RT60) between any two points on the plot
  • Simultaneous display of two wave files allowed in all display modes except Spectrograph
  • Transform options for frequency domain displays: FFT sizes from 128 to 64k samples, variable overlap (0-99 percent), user-selectable data window
  • Max Magnitude range for frequency domain displays:
    +/- 180 dB
  • Calibration options for frequency domain displays: full scale, file max, or custom (engineering units)
  • Wave file recorder allows recording of random length mono or stereo files (limited only by available hard disk space) at 8-24 bit sampling resolutions and sampling rates from 11025 to 48000 samples/sec
